The Danish national handball team took the European championship last night (http://www.ehf-euro.com/). This is a huge deal for the Danes, as handball is one of the top sports in the country and throughout Europe. The Danes were matched up against Serbia and managed to pull out a 19-21 win. My family was gathered in front of the TV as well as the frequenters (the girls' boyfriends and Jan's "second wife"- a guy, his best friend). There was yelling and shouting, American style. What made this event even more fun was that the team flew into Copenhagen today where the people gathered at the city center to welcome them and celebrate the victorious win. When the team arrived they showed off the trophy-plate as you can see in the pictures I took below. The crowd carried a sense of euphoria as they waved their flags, rattled noise makers, and chanted their national song. It was a truly remarkable and unique once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The team arrived straight from the airport on this bus pictured in the middle ground.
This guy, Mikkel Hansen, number 24, is believed to be one of the best handball players in the world. I was standing maybe less than 20 feet from him. He's not bad to look at either.
